COM 328 - Media Law(3 credits; alternate years, consult department) Students understand and learn to apply the legal foundation for media practice both laws that set limits on their practice and laws that authorize and protect their work as media practitioners. The course reviews the laws, court rulings and ethical codes governing freedom of expression, libel, intellectual property, invasion of privacy, hate speech, symbolic speech, obscenity, pornography, and professional conflict of interest. Students will complete a significant research project exploring the legal context of their expected area of practice within the media-journalism, advertising, PR, or multimedia.
Prerequisite: COM185 Media Writing or permission of instructor
