ENG 176WI - Foundations of Multimedia Storytelling(4 credits) (Writing intensive) This course is specifically designed to emphasize multimodal composition and to help students engage with writing, design, and meaning making in more diverse ways. The assignments students do for this class draw upon communication strategies used by institutions outside of universities, such as museums, since their mission is to promote understanding of diverse knowledges among diverse people groups by facilitating effective and strategic multimedia storytelling. As a result, this course is scaffolded so that each unit assignment adds two modes of communication. The first unit emphasizes linguistic and visual modes. The second unit highlights auditory and gestural, and the final unit focuses on all modes by adding spatial and material modes. Ultimately then, this course is about storytelling and the many rhetorical choices a speaker, writer, and digital content creator must make along the way.
